For a breath of fresh air in African Hip Hop look no further than the streets of Lagos, where relative newcomer Me'Mo is making quite an impression.

Just over a year ago it seemed unlikely that the Manuel ‘Me’Mo’ Odhe would ever get his chance to shine after a car accident left him in a coma for several days. Displaying his characteristic drive and focus, he awoke with a stronger sense of purpose than ever before. Refreshed and determined to make his mark on the music world, Me’Mo returned to the studio to record what will surely become his defining project.

From Lagos With Love: Taking Nigerian Hip Hop International

Having already provided lyrics for some of Nigeria’s hottest underground MCs, the multitalented young artist is finally ready to introduce himself to the world through his forthcoming mixtape Tha Epidemic Vol. 1. The release, which will feature his infamous street anthem Blowin’ Money alongside a diverse range of probable hit singles including thug love ballad Close 2 U and club banger Am A Southboi.

Radio-friendly yet retaining his gritty signature sound, this versatile and electrifying new release has the potential to catapult the Nigerian rapper onto the global Hip Hop radar. With his recognition of the significance of online marketing and networking when it goes to success in this industry, Me’Mo has already caught the eye of several industry professionals in both the United States and Great Britain.

He is also due to take the Me’Mo experience to the USA, after having been invited to perform alongside some of the key figures in Southern Hip Hop. Whilst he remains independent for now, with a number of labels having already shown interest in his music, it will only be a matter of time before he is reaching wider audiences. Though his story has really just begun, the gifted young MC is hoping to open another chapter in the African Hip Hop history books.

Sound Familiar?

His distinctive flow, which is rather reminiscent of Lil Wayne’s, has drawn many comparisons, although Me’Mo maintains that he would much rather be regarded as a talent in his own right no matter how flattering such comparisons may seem. Influenced by the sounds of the Dirty South but radiating awareness of his own African identity, Me’Mo has the sure fire recipe to integrate his Nigerian flavour into the international urban music scene.

African Hip Hop is largely yet to really gain much recognition in the international market, although that will not be the case for much longer if this talented artist has his way.Armed with a growing international fan base, a drive unmatched by most artists today and some of the sharpest rhymes Nigeria has to offer, the Epidemic is certainly imminent.
